The Coriopolis Bombing Crisis was the detonation of two nuclear devices inside the space habitat Coriopolis on 17 October 2118 by the Gaia Preservation Front, and the averting of a third. The bombings killed 389 people and injured 1,842. Direct and indirect damage exceeded 1.7 trillion dollars; consequential losses from the scuttling of the atmospheric skimmer fleet, debris mitigation across the L5 region, and the delay to habitat occupation added a further 1.5 trillion. It is the most costly act of terrorism in history.
Over 853,000 residents were displaced until the city was repaired two months later.
Target selection#
Coriopolis was chosen for reasons both symbolic and structural. It is the first true gyrealm and the parent of every habitat design that followed, which made it the most legible possible target for an argument about the cost of habitat construction.
Materially, it was chosen because it is a first-generation structure. Its shell is of glass-fiber construction carried to an engineering safety factor of three — adequate, and markedly less margin than later gyrealms carry. Later designs are engineered against precisely the failure mode the attack was built to exploit and are not vulnerable to it.
Course of the crisis#
The Front’s devices were positioned around the circumference of the cylinder rather than along its length, and were used as political escalation rather than detonated together. Demands were issued, the first device was detonated, the demands were reiterated, and the second device was detonated.
The first communication offered what it called a hint as to where the devices lay, naming a street intersection in the city. Evacuation of the named districts began immediately. The phrasing was literal in a way that was not initially understood: the sites named were not the device locations but the points at which the seismic energy of the devices would converge.
The third device was located and neutralised by the L5 Special Response Unit before it could be fired.
The seismic lens#
The insight that resolved the crisis came from the SRU’s engineering section. A rotating pressurized shell is under greater tension around its circumference than along its axis, so a shock front travels several times faster east and west than north and south. A detonation therefore produces not an expanding circle but a narrow ellipse, whose ends race around the cylinder and meet at the point diametrically opposite the blast — reconstituting two nearly circular fronts, one running toward the southern cap and one toward the city.
In effect the shell acts as a lens, focusing seismic energy onto convergence zones remote from the source. The relationship is reciprocal: a device placed at the convergence zone of another device has its own convergence zone at that other device’s location. The announced targets were the convergence zones; the devices were at their conjugate foci. Once the relation was recognized, the remaining device’s position followed.
Physical effects#
Each detonation occurred slightly inside the interior surface of the shell. Within microseconds the gamma flash superheated the surrounding material; the shell itself absorbed most of the hard radiation, which is the principal reason the casualty figures were as low as they were. The explosion vaporized the shell and drove a hypersonic plasma jet both inward and outward, leaving a hole roughly three hundred meters across.
Most of the fireball grew inside the wall, pressing a dimple some thirty meters deep and nearly a kilometer across before the overpressure blew the shattered section outward into space as shards of glass and rock. Over fifteen million tonnes of material were released into the L5 region, and its subsequent mitigation is a substantial share of the consequential cost.
Inside, the atmosphere responded to the sudden coupling of blast energy into a rotating air mass. The most destructive secondary effects were a pair of counter-rotating tornadoes that persisted well after the blast, gyrating about their origins and gaining energy as they leaned toward the horizontal, ravaging the mountainside to the south and the forest and lake to the north in alternation.
The third device#
Simulations run after the crisis indicate that detonation of the third device would have destroyed Coriopolis outright. Three breaches spaced around the circumference would have propagated into a structural zipper, the hull failing progressively between the breach points under rotational stress until the cylinder separated along its length into two pieces. Projected consequences included substantial damage to numerous other habitats in the L5 region, a death toll in excess of one million, and economic loss above ten trillion dollars.
Consequences#
The United Nations passed the Effective Monitoring of Manufacturing Act of 2119 (EMMA), which substantially increased monitoring and reporting requirements on automated manufacturing with respect to potentially dangerous products, specifically nuclear, biological, and nanotechnological materials. The Act is the principal regulatory legacy of the crisis and a standing constraint on autopoietic industry.
The whole atmospheric skimmer fleet was scuttled. Despite official denials — motivated by a desire not to reward terrorism with policy — the crisis is widely regarded as having accelerated the transition to gas-giant-derived nitrogen by years, and with it the expansion of the Natural Resource Trust’s outer-system licensing schedule.
