Michael was the Gaia Preservation Front operative who planted and detonated the devices in the Coriopolis Bombing Crisis of 2118, and who acted as the Front’s voice throughout the crisis.

Conduct of the attack#

Michael issued the Front’s demands, detonated the first device, reiterated the demands, and detonated the second, using the interval between them as political leverage rather than firing the devices together.

He is the author of the first communication, which offered what it described as a hint to the devices’ locations by naming a street intersection in the city. The phrasing was exact: the location named was not where a device lay but where its seismic energy would converge. Whether the wording was intended as a solvable clue or as a taunt that happened to be solvable is disputed, and the L5 Special Response Unit’s own analysts were divided on the point at the time.

During the standoff he wore a dead man’s trigger — sensors attached to the skin, configured to fire the remaining device if his vital signs deviated from normal for more than five seconds — and disclosed it pre-emptively to deter any attempt to shoot him.

Assessment#

Contemporary assessments are careful to distinguish Michael’s methods from the Front’s underlying position, which rests on the nitrogen drawdown and is not scientifically contested. He appears to have understood the structural consequences of his device placement in detail, including the zipper failure that a third detonation would have initiated, and to have selected Coriopolis specifically for its first-generation hull margin.
