Scimitar Falls is a waterfall in Coriopolis, named for the curved trajectory its water traces as it descends — a direct consequence of the Coriolis effect within the rotating habitat. It is among the most recognizable natural landmarks in the cylinder.

Location and Description#

Scimitar Falls is located within the nature preserve at the southern end of Coriopolis. The water cascades from a significant height, and as it falls, rotation causes it to trace a graceful arc rather than a straight vertical descent. This curve gives the waterfall its name, resembling the blade of a scimitar.

Effect of Rotation#

The Coriolis effect is responsible for the falls’ distinctive shape. Within the rotating frame of the cylinder, falling water is deflected sideways relative to its starting point, producing the curved descent.
